It is the policy of the club that members be approved as a Skipper before taking command of a club-owned boat. Skippers may be approved by the Commodore or Vice Commodore providing that the Commodore and Vice Commodore are experienced skippers themselves and comfortable in assessing candidates.

While club owned boats are keel boats between 20 and 30 feet in length, the Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard is the basis for evaluating candidate Skippers. Skippers must demonstrate that they are able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 metres (18 feet) to 10 metres (30 feet) with an outboard or inboard motor in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

Evaluation will be conducted on the dock and on the water and will generally take two hours with most of that time on the water. There must be sufficient wind for the candidate to demonstrate his/her skills. Not every item will be tested/evaluated.

The cost of the evaluation is  a 2-hour lesson rate payable to Blue Sky Sailing Club and includes the boat usage fee.
