Skipper approval policy.
The club’s policy is that members must be approved as skippers before renting or taking command of club owned boats.
Skippers may be approved by the Commodore, vice Commodore, or designate, providing the Commodore, vice Commodore, and any designates are experienced sailors and competent to assess candidates.
While club owned boats are keel boats between 20 and 30 feet in length, the American Sailing Association basic cruising standard forms the basis for evaluation. Skippers must demonstrate that they are able to cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat between 20 and 30 feet with an outboard or inboard auxiliary motor in the moderate sea conditions by day.
Evaluation will be conducted on the dock and on the water. There must be sufficient wind for the candidate to demonstrate their skills. Not every item will be evaluated and in instances where it is immediately apparent from certification and demonstration that a candidate is qualified, any balance of time will be used for familiarization with the club’s boats.
The cost of the evaluation is two hours of sailing instruction, payable to Blueskysailingclub, which amount includes the boat usage fee and evaluator time.
Students that successfully complete the 10 hour basic keelboat sailing package are evaluated by the instructor based on the instructor’s observation of the candidates ability and the instructor is hereby designated as an approver
Masthead policy.
The club’s policy is that members shall not permit a person to be hoisted to the masthead or spreaders on any club boats.
In the event that it is necessary to access the masthead or spreaders, when the boat is in the water, the club will arrange for a skyjack or for mast lowering, depending on the circumstance.
To avoid the need to access the mast head, all users should take care to facilitate the proper installation of masthead equipment, and the handling of halyards.
