Learn To Sail Programs:
Pram Sail (10 foot) dinghy:
This level is for beginners ages 7-9. Only four young sailors per class and they can advance at their own pace. Basic terminology, rigging, seamanship and boat handling skills. The goal is learning to have fun. Pram boats are perfect for the young beginner. This is a 4 week (28 hours) course that is held two mornings a week. Maximum 4 person / course
Kolibri (12 foot) and CL-16 dinghy:
These are larger boats that require a little more technique with plenty of fun. This level is for beginners ages 11 and up. Only four sailors per class (ages are closely matched when possible) and they can advance at their own pace. Basic terminology, rigging, seamanship and boat handling skills. A great place to start if you want a good foundation from which to advance your sailing skills. This is a 4 week (28 hours) course that is held two mornings a week. Adults also will have fun learning to sail these boats. Maximum 4 person / course
OCEAN 21 and Coronado 23 KEEL:
These boats have cabins so they are much more technical than the Dinghy class boats. A valid Pleasure Craft Operator Card is mandatory before you begin this course. You’ll cover the basics, become a skipper and learn the steps to begin to becoming a proficient keel boat sailor. This is a 4 week course that is held two mornings a week. Maximum 4 person / course
Pinch Hitter Course
Like in baseball, you may be called to sail the boat in a pinch, while the skipper fixes the rigging or has other duties to perform. For this reason, the Blue Sky Sailing Club has a pinch hitter course. It teaches you the basics of sailing and you will become a good crew member and you could sail the boat if you had to take over. You’ll also gain enough experience to start sailing your own boat. This is a 10 hour course, in 4 lessons of 2.5 hours, taught one on one, to fit your schedule (day, evening, weekend). It can be taught in 2 days, 4 days or 4 weeks. By appointment only.
Challenge
Do you feel ready to take it up a notch? The Challenge program allows you to acquire your certification in accordance to the Canadian Yachting Association’s recommendations. White Sail I, II and III and Basic Cruising are some of the certification levels to considered. We’ll put in to a boat with a CYA Instructor who will challenge your skills and knowledge to meeting CYA standards. Detailed information is found at the Ontario Sailing website and the CYA website. By appointment only, hourly rate.
Prerequisites:
A Pleasure Craft Operators Card is essential but not mandatory to participate in the dinghy courses. There are several on-line courses of which you can obtain your card. A sun hat, sun screen, Canadian approved life jacket, beach towel, rain / wind jacket, water bottle and shoes that don’t leave skid marks are the personal items that you will need. Youths are required to know how to swim.
